Another round of living legends vs. young ingeues
Rosemarie Dewitt, 'Promised Land'
Pro: The trailer for Gus van Sant's December farm drama doesn't tell us much more about Dewitt's character than that she's a good-humored schoolteacher with a nice smile. It could be an undistinguished love-interest role, but if any actress is capable of creating a warm, lived-in character from such a part it's Dewitt. Considered unlucky by many for failing to nab a nod in this category for “Rachel Getting Married” in 2008, the respected character actress has made a resurgence this year, with other prominent roles in “Your Sister's Sister” (for which some feel she deserves Oscar attention) and “The Watch” (not so much, but exposure is exposure), among others. Voters may choose to acknowledge that hard work by focusing on her last release of the year.
Con: Nobody's seen the film yet, so we have no idea if it, or any of the performance in it, merit attention. Dewitt's fans, meanwhile, may prefer to recognize her for a more substantial turn in “You Sister's Sister.”
