Pro: Paul Thomas Anderson has passed into the upper echelon of American auteurs, and “The Master” has only earned him further critical huzzahs (and festival prizes). Look for it to be a dominant force in the year-end critics' awards, and for the Weinsteins' campaign to capitalize on that prestige.
Con: For all its dazzle, it's a chilly film, and one many viewers struggle to grapple with thematically: voters may find it easier to admire than to love.
