This year's top candidates from 'A' for 'Argo' to 'Z' for 'Zero Dark Thirty'
Pro: Joe Wright’s staging of the Leo Tolstoy classic is absolutely stunning. The Focus Features release should dominate below the line nominations including original score, costumes, art direction and more. The ensemble including Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Kelly Macdonald have received fantastic notices as a collective ensemble.
Con: Major awards contender releasing in the UK at the beginning of September and not hitting the U.S. until November? Sound like deja vu? You bet it is. Focus has been through this unfortunate storyline before. It happened last year when “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” became a big hit in the UK in Sept., but came out too late in the US to make a true dent in the Oscar best picture race. This time around, “Karenina” has done OK at the English box office and hits American soil a tad earlier than “Tailor” did on Nov. 16. It doesn’t help that the reaction from U.S. critics in Toronto was a solid, but not enthusiastic endorsement. Can it keep enough buzz going to stay on Academy members radar?
