This year's top candidates from 'A' for 'Argo' to 'Z' for 'Zero Dark Thirty'
Pro: Based on a true story, Juan Antonio Bayona’s masterfully directed epic depicts the events of the Indian Ocean Tsunami on Dec. 26, 2004 and how it almost literally tore a family apart. A major tearjerker, “Impossible” should win over Academy voters by the second act. It also features a revelatory performance by Brit Tom Holland and a potential best actress nominee in Naomi Watts.
Con: The concerns over “Impossible’s” candidacy are twofold. First, will Academy members be informed enough to realize the heart-tugging coincidences depicted in the story are actually true and not a screenwriter’s dream? And, second, will Summit put enough of an awards push behind the picture to get it a nomination? Is the studio satisfied hoping word of mouth will help it get in or will they slap members the full court press to make sure they see it in a theater?
