Ang Lee - 'Life of Pi'
Pro: The last time Ang Lee was on the circuit, he did pretty well for himself with kudos and accolades galore for "Brokeback Mountain," which went on to shockingly lose Best Picture to "Crash." There are no doubt those who want to see that made up to him (even if he did win Best Director for that film), but regardless, he probably won't need it. "Life of Pi" is sure to remain one of the most emotional films of the year and it's one entirely dependent on Lee's visionary take on the material. Directors will appreciate it.
Con: Like with Affleck, it's hard to come up with a reason why the Academy wouldn't want to award this kind of achievement, but I suppose there could be those resistant to the future of mixed-media filmmaking represented by films like "Avatar" and "Life of Pi." And the film itself could prove too saccharine-coated for some.
