2013 Best Director Contenders

From Ben Affleck to Joss Whedon

David Ayer - 'End of Watch'

Pro: Well-reviewed with a handful of dynamic performances and a unique brand of filmmaking, "End of Watch" could be a handsome alternative to the usual this season. David Ayer has never managed much in the awards game, though he did write a pair of performances to nominations in "Training Day." The local flavor of the film could give it a leg up, too.

Con: Despite all that, "End of Watch" is likely to be admired for its entertainment value rather than as a piece of award-worthy art. It's a modern day cop drama and those don't exactly fare well unless they are game-changing in the subgenre, and despite its clever construction, there is a whiff of familiarity on this one.
