'Rust and Bone' - Story by Craig Davidson; Screenplay by Jacques Audiard & Thomas Bidegain - Adapted Screenplay
Pro: Audiard's latest is a tricky feat of adaptation, weaving together selected elements from a volume of short stories into a single heightened melodrama. This emotionally draining high-wire act inspires passionate devotion in many quarters, and with the film ineligible in the foreign-language category, its admirers will vote for it where they can.
Con: Since its Cannes premiere, the film has proved a divisive piece of work, with many finding it artificial and overwrought. Even a number of its fans, meanwhile, may see the visually and sonically dazzling film more as a triumph of direction than of scripting.
