'Promised Land' - Story by Dave Eggers; Screenplay by Matt Damon & John Krasinski - Original Screenplay
Pro: It may be conventional but Damon and Krasinski's script for "Promised Land" might just be the film's best shot at awards recognition. It's a simple yarn but one with heart and a concerned eye toward the country's shifting landscape of values. In a year such as this, with plenty of zeitgeist elements in play across a wide spectrum of contenders, it might be the most potent message movie of all -- and it's one that drills deeper than just the fracking dealt with breached on the surface.
Con: As mentioned, it's conventional. Strikingly so coming from a director like Gus Van Sant. As such, it could come off a bit small and inconsequential for some voters. The "TV movie" pejorative might be tossed around, which won't be entirely fair.
