'Magic Mike' - Reid Caolin - Original Screenplay
Pro: Steven Soderbergh's male-stripper comedy was one of the surprise sleepers of the summer, overcoming its deceptively scuzzy subject matter to impress critics and please audiences to the tune of $113 million. And a lot of its success comes down to its smart, witty screenplay, which takes the form of a well-rounded character study with a wealth of subtle sociological detail. It just happens to be about guys in leather thongs.
Con: Unfortunately, that caveat I just mentioned could be a sticking point with the Academy, which skews older and more male – the very opposite of the demographic that largely made “Magic Mike” a hit. Despite the strong reviews and box office, the film never developed serious awards traction.
