The Lowdown: The final GKIDS hopeful of the 2012 animated lot tells one of the most epic and human stories of the bunch. Pathé's "Zarafa" is very traditional in style; some might even argue its manner archaic. It's nevertheless handsomely mounted and this tale of a young African boy's journey from the Sudan to Paris with an orphaned giraffe could stir emotions not all that well-exercised by other contenders. But as mature as its story may be, the technique doesn't stand out so much, making much of the competition seem a little more well-rounded. That might have been what held "Arrugas (Wrinkles)" back last year while more stylish efforts like "A Cat in Paris" and "Chico & Rita" got in from the distributor. Could that be the case this year, too?
