"The Rabbi's Cat"
Director: Antoine Delesvaux, Joann Sfar
The Lowdown: The third of the GKIDS contenders is the César Award-winning "The Rabbi's Cat, from Antoine Delesvaux and Joann Sfar, based on Sfar's best-selling book. And that award isn't to be taken too lightly. "A Cat in Paris" managed César and Oscar nods, as did "The Illusionist." The film is nimbly animated with Mediterranean flare and heightened style, while the story is a biting and skewering one that puts it on a more adult but not overly dramatic level unique in the race. It's certainly in the conversation and, should the indie distributor manage another two-fer this year, I'd look here and to "The Painting" to score. But is the commercial side of the race thin enough to allow for two? It may not be.
