Anthony Hopkins - 'Hitchcock'
Pro: Lately, voters seem all but powerless to resist the bait of one famous person playing another – seven of the last 10 Best Actor champs won for biopics – and Hopkins as Hitchcock certainly fits right into that wheelhouse on paper. Adding Hollywood royalty into the equation multiplies the allure. Fox Searchlight clearly believe they have something here, having yanked the film, initially scheduled for a 2013 release, forward into awards season, just as they did with “Crazy Heart” in 2009...
Con: Hopkins, if we can put this delicately, hasn't exactly been in prime form for several years – can he still wow us after his rut of paycheck roles? Playing Hitchcock, meanwhile, comes with a high risk of teetering into camp – will it be a full-blooded performance, or just an amusing impersonation?
