2012 Golden Globe Nominees: Winners and Losers

An entire network, a possible Oscar fave and Muppets get the shaft

Loser: 'The Muppets'

Considering "The Muppets" is both a comedy AND a musical, what could be a better fit for the Globes' category of the same name? A joyful, candy-colored confection that qualifies as "fun for the whole family," it avoids the treacly silliness we usually associate with that description. Instead, "My Weekend with Marilyn," which is neither a comedy nor, really, a musical (except for exactly one song tossed into the storyline) took a spot that, really, should have been saved for Miss Piggy.

And sure, we've heard "Mahna Mahna" a million times, but going back to a beloved well shouldn't discount the pure joy that is "Life's a Happy Song." "Flight of the Conchords" songwriter Bret McKenzie's contributions to this soundtrack are enjoyable -- and blissfully cheeky, blasting tracks like Chris Cornell's backwash "The Keeper" out of the water. Hasn't anybody told the HFPA that Mary J. Blige will sing on just about anything?
