Tom Hanks, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"
Pro: Just who is Tom Hanks? He's Mr. Hollywood, this generation's Jimmy Stewart, winner of two Academy Awards, recipient of five nominations and one of the most beloved figures in the industry. In "Extremely Close" he's got the crucial part of Thomas Schell, Jr., the father of the film's hero, young Oskar Schell. In a post 9/11 world, Oskar searches New York City for clues about his dad who was killed in the terrorist attacks. In his three previous films, director Stephen Daldry has seen six of his actors receive best actress, best supporting actress or best supporting actor nominations.
Con: Early buzz from the unfinished film is that Hanks' co-star, Max von Sydow, steals the show. Unlike some of his peers, winning Oscars or getting a nomination doesn't seem that important anymore to Hanks who also just happens to be one of the Academy's board of governors.
