2012 Best Actress Oscar Contenders

Is it Davis vs. Williams vs. Streep?

Can Streep finally return to the winner's circle?

Can Streep finally return to the winner's circle?

Could Meryl Streep find herself looking at yet another trip to the Kodak Theater without a win?  The 16-time nominee is back in the race with her role as Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady," but faces some stuff competition from "The Help's" Viola Davis, "My Week with Marilyn's" Michelle Williams, "Albert Nobbs'" Glenn Close, "Martha Marcy May Marlene's" Elizabeth Olsen and "Like Crazy's" Felicity Jones among others.  Streep has long been seen as a frontrunner to finally land her third Oscar, but it certainly won't be easy.  Here's a rundown of all the players in an increasingly competitive 2012 best actress race.

No one has seen "The Iron Lady", so Streep's nod is hardly a given. Plus, it's premiering is China, which makes me even more suspicious. If the critics rip this movie apart and are indifferent to Streep's performance she will be left out. Sure, "Doubt" and "Julie and Julia" received mixed reviews, but this is suppose to be a "serious" movie, and if the film and Streep's performance aren't on point they will be taken to task.

Jonnybon She's a lock for a nomination here. We all know it will be a great performance.

Nothing's a guarantee, especially since Steep has given creaky performances under weak direction ("The Manchurian Candidate", "Doubt"). I just don't see how a performance that no one has seen is a given for an Oscar nod, even if it is Streep.

Jonnybon and there was nothing weak about the direction of Doubt. All the performances were superb. Four very deserved Oscar nominations for acting. That's rare.

Tom Yeah, wow. I thought "Doubt" was terrific. One of my favorite films that year. And Streep was on her game.

    False Acclaim

Michelle Williams is not in the ranks of talented actors.
Why was she ever nominated for Brokeback Mountain?
Michelle's performance in that was very CONTRIVED AND TRITE just as her performance was in Blue Valentine.
She FAILED to master the passionate and sensual expressions of Marilyn Monroe. Michelle has the personality of a DRONE with
no screen presence and she leaves the audience disappointed.
Only because she had the PRIVILEGE of working with actors
in demand she got to bask in their achievements and acclaim getting some for herself.
Michelle is not a true actress. She can't escape her own personality. So why then does she get nominations. Is it because she became a member of the Academy Awards? That's a reason?

Oscar Gold Obviously someone with such lack of knowledge in the cinematic film history should be even judging someone else great and exceptional work in TWO well deserved Academy Award nominations for Brokeback Mountain and Blue Valentine which touched peoples hearts. Michelle Williams worked her way to the top with great poise and talent that would be the only reason critics have come to lover her and respect the talent that she possesses on the screen. Her new film My Week With Marilyn has been getting magnificent reviews for her inner and outer portrayal of the bombshell icon, Marilyn Monroe. My suggestion to this person who must have some hatred to Michelle Williams, or maybe jealousy to her great talent, is to to let the critics who spent their years of knowledge decide whether Michelle can "escape her own personality" as mentioned by this person, and win critical acclaim for a long deserved recognition in the film community. I would say her Golden Globe nomination last night and win would prove otherwise. I would reconsider your thoughts when she is making her way to the Oscar podium at the Kodak Theater this come February

Michelle Yeoh in The Lady is not to be overlooked. Also Kate Winslet in Carnage.
