2012 Best Actor Oscar Contenders

Is it Clooney versus the field?

Who will join Oscar's boys club?

Who will join Oscar's boys club?

Looking back at the past decade, there hasn't been many surprises in the race to win the best actor Academy Award.  By the time the New Year came around, most pundits and Academy members pretty much already knew who would win taking most of the fun out of this category. And, yes, that's even before the nominations were announced.  Sure, Mickey Rourke gave Sean Penn a good run at it in 2009, but the only real upset you can point to is Adrien Brody in 2003 for "The Pianist."  Will 2012 provide an old fashioned horse race that seems only to be left to the supporting categories these days? George Clooney has sprinted out to the lead with massive acclaim for his role in Alexander Payne's "The Descendants," but does he have any real competition in the wings?

Let's review this year's batch of contenders and find out.

I think the 5 will be:

    Clooney
    Dujardin
    DiCaprio
    Gosling
    Fassbender

-Oldman could be a sure thing or a just miss. As of now, I have him just missing.
-Michael Shannon would be my 7th.
    -And Matt Damon could surprise.

You missed a great performance by Martin Sheen in THE WAY. Amazing, beautiful, nuanced and moving. Also, he's in every frame of the film. Should be included on your list.

    1. Gary Oldman
    2. George Clooney
    3. Brad Pitt
    4. Jean Dujardin
    5. Leonardo DiCaprio

I think Oldman, Clooney and Pitt are shoo-ins to get nominated. The other two slots are toss-up between DiCaprio, DuJardin, Gosling, Shannon or Fassbender. I think DiCaprio and DuJardin will get the remaining slots because more people saw J. Edgar and The Artist is getting a lot more publicity.
