2012 Academy Award nominees: Winners and losers
Oscars show love for George Clooney and Woody Allen, while 'Harry Potter' and dark themes get the shaft
Loser: Polarizing movies ("Young Adult," "We Need to Talk About Kevin," "Shame")
While the challenging protagonists of these films created lots of buzz among viewers and critics, they didn't generate kudos from the Academy. Even actors Charlize Theron, Tilda Swinton and Michael Fassbender were snubbed despite tackling some shockingly treacherous territory (a mother who hates her son?). Were these characters just too unlikable for Academy voters? We'll never know, but probably.
