Loser: Ricky Gervais - Future Golden Globes Host
The job of a host at these events is partially to entertain the audience at home and partially to set a tone in the room. As Robert Downey Jr. declared, "Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited, with mildly sinister overtones, I'd say the vibe of the show is pretty good so far." It's likely that Downey was joking. It's likely that Steve Carell was joking in his standard award-show banter with Gervais. It's likely that Tom Hanks and Tim Allen were joking later when they took exception to their intros. It's even totally possible that the president of the HFPA was joking when he took offense at Gervais' gibes. But you can be sure that people at home believed that more than a little of the umbrage was genuine. Gervais nearly disappeared from the show in its second half, prompting half of my Twitter feed to inquire if he'd been taken out back and shot. The reality is that award show hosts *always* vanish in the second half of shows as adjustments are made to help things run on time. Even still... Perception. And the perception this year was that Gervais had two purposes on the Golden Globes stage: The first, to make up for last year's soft performance, and the second, to make sure that he never gets asked back to host again. Probably, mission accomplished.
