2011 Golden Globes Winners & Losers

Which category did Ricky Gervais land in?

Winner: Ricky Gervais - Truth Teller

Winner: Ricky Gervais - Truth Teller

There was a sense last year that Ricky Gervais held back in his first turn as Golden Globes host. He managed to insult the people in the room, but he also managed to appear tentative. Nobody's going to accuse Gervais of timidity this time around. From the opening credits, he set a tone of harsh mockery, directed at the event's organizers, the Hollywood Foreign Press, but also at many of the stars in the room and many of their movies. He also took cracks at Scientology and, in his final send-off, he even managed to offend more than a few viewers with an interest in God. And he was often hilarious. Not always, mind you. I'd say he only hit his targets maybe half of the time, a far lower percentage than in his regular appearances as presenter at other telecasts -- lazy jokes about Charlie Sheen and Robert Downey Jr. are just lazy jokes -- but he got some big laughs and had much of the audience at home and some of the audience at the Beverly Hilton nodding along.

You know why it seemed Gervais may have been kicked off the show during the second half? because we actually MISSED HIM. Yes- hosts disappear during the second half and we usually wouldn't care. He was definitely the biggest winner of the night on my book (and GOD's too).

P.S. Can't wait to see Natalie pull a Catherine Zeta Jones and get up on stage to get that Oscar all ballooned up!

"But somehow, "The Pacific" lost the Movie/Miniseries category to Sundance Channel's "Carlos," in what has to be considered probably the night's biggest upset in any category."

Come off it! Carlos is FAR better than The Pacific! Worthy winner. No question. The Pacific might not have even been runner-up.

A worthy target of mockery, a roomful of toadies afraid to laugh and stars SHOCKED to discover that Gervais doesn't know his place in the Hollywood food chain. How dare he! Go Ricky.

Just for the record: Laura Linney's father, playwright Romulus Linney, died on Saturday. Not exactly the sort of thing Vanessa Williams was likely to announce as to why she wasn't there....

BS! Burlesque winning for Best Song is not a Pia Zadora moment. The movie may have sucked, but that particular song (You Haven't Seen the Last of me) was great. Lame!

Re Censors: I was watching the broadcast through a British broadcaster, and it was a squeal to hear Christian Bale fit in some "sh*t" and "f*ck" on the tail end of his speech.

I loved the swipe at Tim Allen, I had no idea why he was up there until someone explained to me that he voiced a character in Toy Story with Hanks.

I had my closed captioning on during the program and Giammati indeed said Jesus Christ. Apparently the people who right closed captions are not as prudish as the HFPA. Giammati was not the first to say Jesus Christ during the night and it was bleeped out then as well. When Giammati was given the award I had my back to the television he said it so many time I thought my television had shut down. I then turned around and saw that he had said Jesus Christ.

Isn't the host's part of the ceremony written and rehearsed? Is the implication that Gervais went off book, or that no one at HFPA knew what he was going to say beforehand (but the writers and director did)?

Dimmi I watched the arrivals on E! and Ryan Seacrest said from what he saw at rehearsals/run through there was a big chance of people being offended. He seemed to think maybe Gervais wouldn't actually say some of what Seacrest heard at rehearsal.

I don't get how the girl from True Grit is a supporting actress. She was in the movie more then every other cast member. The story is about her. The story is told by her. She is in every scene.
