Loser: Sony Pictures Classics
At first glance, Sony Classics, the indie division of Sony Pictures, seemed to have a fairly solid number of nominations: Paul Giamatti for "Barney's Version," "The Illusionist" in animation and "Animal Kingdom's" Jacki Weaver in supporting actress. But in reality, this was the division's poorest showing in years. "Made in Dagenham" could have landed three nods by itself -- including one for former Globe winner Sally Hawkins; Robert Duvall and "Get Low" (which the mini-major has been pushing hard for months) was shut out; and Mike Leigh's "Another Year" found star Leslie Manville locked out of the best actress race. Considering how poor the candidates for best picture - comedy or musical were, the idea neither "Dagenham" or "Barney's Version" could make the field is jaw dropping. The indie division will have to hope it can turn things around with the SAGs and, of course, Oscar.
