2011 Golden Globe Awards Contenders
Predicting the always unpredictable HFPA's Film and TV nominees
A year of tough decisions for the Globes
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association faces a number of challenges as 2010 closes. Most distressing, they are engaged in a nasty lawsuit with longtime Golden Globes producer Dick Clark Productions over the show's future on NBC, but they have even more pressing issues with this year's nominees. Mainly, will they find any legitimate musical or comedy contenders in the movie categories?
Usually, breaking out the major film and TV categories into "drama" and "musical or comedy" has been a boon to the always eager to please Globes. Unfortunately, Hollywood's filmmakers decided to go pretty serious this year leaving them the unenviable task of excluding some critically acclaimed dramas and their leading men (no, you can't nominate everyone). The television side has its own tough decisions for the 80 or so HFPA members to try and figure out. The organization prides itself on recognizing up and coming shows and talent, but how do you accomplish that in drama without excluding a "True Blood," "Good Wife" or -- perish the thought -- "Breaking Bad"?
With those challenges in mind, HitFix's Gregory Ellwood and Daniel Fienberg have done the dirty work so you won't have a coronary when the nominees for the 68th Golden Globe Awards are announced in the wee hours of Tuesday, Dec. 14.

December 7, 2010 at 9:06AM EST Reply to CommentHow are Boardwalk Empire/Walking Dead even eligible for the globes at the same time Lost is eligible? Those were two completely different seasons (09-10 for lost, 10-11 for BWE/WD). What is the eligible season for the Globes, just whatever's been on since the last Globes?
sepinwall Globes cover the calendar year. Emmys cover the TV season.

December 7, 2010 at 10:28AM EST Reply to CommentWhere is the love for The Pacific? You mean no one from that series got a nod? Joe Mazzello, Ashton Holmes, Martin McCann, Rami Malek? None of thes even get a nod? I'm sorry... I am calling BS on this whole award process.
dan You'll note that "Somebody in 'The Pacific'" is listed as a Dark Horse. Nobody from "The Pacific" got an Emmy nod and that was only against supporting actors from the year's other movies and miniseries. At the Golden Globe, any supporting actor contenders compete against supporting actors from TV shows, movies and everything. Thus, it's just a REALLY hard field for them to crack...

December 7, 2010 at 10:46AM EST Reply to CommentWHOAAAAAAA. No Kyle Chandler?
dan Kaitlin - Although I suspect they have very little chance of being nominated -- "FNL" just isn't a Hollywood Foreign Press kinda show -- my failure to include Chandler and Britton from the Dark Horse lists was a total oversight, now rectified. Thanks!

December 7, 2010 at 2:29PM EST Reply to CommentHelen Mirren from RED? Really? She was in the film for not more than half-an-hour! And it's not like she was pulling heavy weight in them!
And Cameron Diaz from Knight and Day? She was AWFUL in the flick and wouldn't be out of place on a list for The Razzies!
And finally, why so much love for Alice in Wonderland? The film sucked balls!
Gee, maybe the Musical and Comedy categories are really weak this time.
justin I think it is only weak if the HFPA make it so. Scott Pilgrim should definitely be nominated for best comedy/musical and at least one song for best song.
December 7, 2010 at 7:50PM ESTJonnybon Yeah, Scott Pilgrim must have a pretty good chance.

December 7, 2010 at 3:40PM EST Reply to CommentIs there a bigger joke of an awards show than the Golden Globes? Is there a more ridiculous body of voters than the HFPA?
Yes, American Music Award and MTV VMA voters. Much worse.

December 7, 2010 at 9:20PM EST Reply to CommentI'd forgotten Breaking Bad was never nominated for a Golden Globe in pretty much any category. Wow, that's something! I now care even less about the GG than I did before, if that's possible.

December 7, 2010 at 9:58PM EST Reply to CommentBurell and Bowen seem to me unquestionably the leads of Modern Family, I'm surprised they don't have a chance in those categories.
dan Ed W - They do, but only if the Golden Globe voters decide that they don't care about the "All for one, one for all" ethos that led the Modern Family stars to all submit as "supporting" for Emmy consideration. And that's difficult to predict simply because *none* of the "Modern Family" co-stars were nominated in any category at the Globes last year.

December 8, 2010 at 10:43PM EST Reply to CommentHi - January Jones is submitted in supporting and Elisabeth Moss is submitted in Lead. Also, I am pretty sure IFC's "Carlos" is submitted in the TV Movie/Mini-series categories.
