2011 Best Supporting Actress Oscar Contenders
Could this be the year's most competitive category?
Will the first-timer tradition continue?
Like Baseball, trends and statistics actually mean something in Oscar voting. In the best supporting actress category, first time winners dominate. You rarely ever see a former Academy Award winner repeat in this field. In fact, the last time that occurred was when Dianne Wiest won her second statue for "Bullets Over Broadway" in 1994. Oh, and guess whose back in contention in this category this year? Wiest. The legendary actress has her own trends to overcome to duplicate that feat here, but it doesn't bode well for other potential nominees such as Marion Cotillard. Still, among all the acting races this year, best supporting actress may be the most wide open. Not just to win, but to land a nod. With that in mind, let's review the 20 contenders vying for those precious five slots.

October 15, 2010 at 6:37AM EST Reply to Commentwtf hitfixgregory??? You had said that her performance was OK, but there's no chance she'll be even nominated for an Indie award, maybe Gandolfini&Leo, but not her!! WTF??? Oh, you want to go with the flow don't you?? When is this girl gonna stop being shoved down people's throughts??? Srsly!!!!
Dina Kristen Stewart has been talked about in award capacity for this and The Runaways since Sundance. Maybe Gregory was behind. If you don't like Kristen Stewart then stop clicking on stories about her "Jason". There are 19 other actresses mentioned.
October 15, 2010 at 3:59PM ESTlee She really kicked as# as Joan Jett... not too many actresses could have pulled that off... she was fantastic. From the clips I've seen of WTTR, she gives an amazing, raw performance, so what's your problem... you still hung up on her in Twilight... and also, sorry but I can't handle "throughts" ...... it's "throats"... and no one is shoving her down your throat; you keep clicking on every article, picture, whatever about her now don't you...

October 15, 2010 at 8:50AM EST Reply to CommentGosh. I've had enough of this KStew promotion.
tam I too. Kristen Stewart isn't a good actress and I'm shocked that she was placed in this article. In every movie she's showing exact the same character with exact the same bland face. She's gripping her hair or biting her lips more often than using her facial expression.
October 15, 2010 at 7:04PM ESTThe Runaways and Into the Wild are the only movies which are watchable. And no, nobody ever talked about Kristen getting any awards beside gossip sites and MTV. I'm not saying that it won't happen because her movie is still going to be released but till now we haven't heard anything.
And like someone perfectly said: Melissa Leo would be more deserving to get a nomination because she can act. In this movie she's just better than Kstew.

October 15, 2010 at 9:44AM EST Reply to CommentDefinitely no for Rooney Mara, two scenes in The Social Network that could have been played by anyone else. Only reason she stood out in my opinion is because I knew she was the new "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."
Helena Bonham Carter
Dianne Wiest
Barbara Hershey
Hailee Steinfield
The 5th spot is a toss up that I think will kind of depend on what kind of box office draw certain films have received and how much the Academy likes certain people. Though I would like to see Chole Moretz there.

October 15, 2010 at 10:29AM EST Reply to CommentHaven't seen the movie, but it looks good!
Now Twilight BD can say they have two Oscar winners if she does win. Director Bill Condon is the other.
Hope she doesn't get hit with the Oscar Curse like Halle Berry, Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock, and a few others.
They all won, and broke up with their husbands/boyfriends. All got cheated on. The darn Oscar Curse!
October 15, 2010 at 11:21AM EST Reply to CommentShit, Mila Kunis is SO hot.

October 15, 2010 at 1:54PM EST Reply to CommentSony will push Mara for the same reason they'll push Andrew Garfiled -- she's the girl with the dragon tattoo.

October 15, 2010 at 2:37PM EST Reply to CommentI'm glad you included Kristen Stewart. Natalie Portman didn't exactly turn heads for her acting in the Star Wars prequels but she went on to get an Oscar nomination and will probably get another one this year. Stewart has been doing quality films most of her life. Rileys is doing the film festival circuit and Leo is in other movies that may get her a nomination so Stewart might have a chance. A small chance but still a chance.
October 15, 2010 at 3:30PM EST Reply to CommentMara is great in her scenes, but she only appears in two. And sure, she's the central reason (at least in the film version of things) why Zuckerberg got started, but that's like giving an award to a red herring.

October 15, 2010 at 3:38PM EST Reply to CommentUmm no the Twilight role is perfectly fine. Don't diss Twilight because of the awful acting, directing and budget.
KStew for Oscar
October 15, 2010 at 4:13PM EST Reply to CommentWhat do you mean she has to finish Twilight in order to be taken seriously? WTF? Didn't Anna Kendrick just get a nomination? Kristen has way more serious movie credentials than Anna. Simply put, either you have a Twilight bias or you don't know what you're talking aobut which means we should disreagard what you're saying PERIOD. Because what you just said about Kristen getting an Oscar not based upon everything we are hearing about her performance is just ridiculous.
You cannot say that about Kristen and Twilight being a "con" when Anna was just nominated the entire awards' season last year and she plays a major well-known beloved character.
We shouldn't take you seriously.

October 16, 2010 at 2:06AM EST Reply to CommentAll of you saying Kristen Stewart can't act clearly haven't seen her in The Cake Eaters, Speak, Into The Wild, The Runaways OR WELCOME TO THE RILEYS!! Kristen is incredible in WTTR and I hope she's nominated for an Oscar because she deserves it! She took a lot of risks in the film and it paid of big time. Jason, Jess & Tam: if you don't like Kristen or the postive comments hitfixgregory made about her performance THEN DON'T READ THE STORY! idiots
tam The guy didn't make any good comments about her acting. He just named movies which she had done and which the most people didn't even see.
October 16, 2010 at 6:21AM ESTBut yes, I saw Cake Eaters and Speak. Very normal acting for a young actress but now she's an adult and should act that way.
And she didn't take any risks. She played a depressed girl (again) and played in a movie where the sex is an important factor (again). So where is the risk?
Btw this isn't a story about Kristen Stewart. Look at the headline it's about the best contenders.

I find it funny how you say that this isn't a story about Kristen Stewart, which it indeed isn't, but yet you only seem to care to talk about her. Apparently, you are tired of the promotion of Stewart, when this article is about, and equally "promoting", 20 performances. To me it seems you don't even care about what the article is about, and it most certainly don't seem as you read through it based on your comment.
As for the contendors in the Supporting category, Bonham Carter is a safe bet. I would also love a nod for Amy Adams and wouldn't mind a double nod for The Fighter so that Melissa Leo got in as well(like Up in the Air did last year). I think Hailee Steinfeld has a great shot at a nod, seeing she stars in one of the most anticipated movies of the year and the academy seemns to like newcomers. For the last spot I'd say either Sissy Spacek or Miranda Richardson.
tam If I wouldn't have cared about this article then I wouldn't have read it.

October 16, 2010 at 9:50AM EST Reply to CommentWow people hate much! These nominations are not about the person’s personality or their past & current performances; it's about the role they are nominated for. Kristen is amazing in this film!!! She is raw, vulnerable and feels real. This performance is unlike any other!!! She deserves this nomination more than anyone else in this category. When you watch this movie set your bias Kristen prejudice aside and watch the performance.
Yes I’m a fan of Kristen’s and Twilight and agree 100% that you can’t count it as a con when Anna was nominated. After all it was Twilight that made Anna a household name. So it is no more a con than it was for Anna!

October 17, 2010 at 6:35AM EST Reply to Commentbonham Carter definitely, Sissy Spacek probably, Melissa Leo too, maybe Richardson or Adams. Hell, I saw Welcome to the Riley's and thought Stewart shined honestly, so I wouldn't have a problem with her getting a nod as well.

October 18, 2010 at 7:47PM EST Reply to CommentMs. Hershey has had such an accomplished career for some 40+ years. She deserves the accolades and the Oscar for this powerful performance. She's not one to do publicity so we'll see how that aspect plays out. In any case, if my vote counted, she would have it.
