Peter Weir, "The Way Back"
Pro: Nominated four times in this category for "Witness," "The Truman Show," "Dead Poets Society" and "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World." Weir is so beloved by his filmmaking peers he received his "Truman Show" nod when the film didn't make the best picture cut. With another epic canvas at his hands again, he could easily surprise with a nod once again.
Con: "Way Back" is being released by a much smaller distributor with more limited resources than his previous films. It also remains to be seen whether his name can generate the same amount of support without critical kudos for "Way Back" overall. Reviews so far have been mixed.
