2011 Best Actress Oscar Contenders
Portman, Swinton, Lawrence, Bening, Kidman, Manville, Hathaway, Williams: who gets left out?
Leslie Manville, "Another Year"
Pro: A longtime collaborator of director Mike Leigh, Manville has never been nominated despite strong work in films such as "High Hopes," "Secrets & Lies," "Topsy-Turvy," "All or Nothing" and "Vera Drake." She's certainly due a nod. Oh, and she's pretty great in this one.
Con: The picture doesn't hit theaters until Dec. 29. That means a lot of love for her performance is going to have to come from screeners and guild screenings. That could be dangerous with such a competitive field. Despite her resume, the Brit is also not that well known on this side of the pond.

Curious that such a legend with a career unlike most actresses living today, with a role that stands with the best of her other work (The Piano Teacher, La Ceremonie, Coup de Torchon, etc) would be ignored for such a political and relevant masterpiece. Swinton deserves a nom as well in my opinion, by no means saying she doesn't. But in a perfect world they would take 2 of the 5 spots.
