Cannes Film Festival 2013

2011 Best Actress Oscar Contenders

Portman, Swinton, Lawrence, Bening, Kidman, Manville, Hathaway, Williams: who gets left out?

Leslie Manville, "Another Year"

Pro: A longtime collaborator of director Mike Leigh, Manville has never been nominated despite strong work in films such as "High Hopes," "Secrets & Lies," "Topsy-Turvy," "All or Nothing" and "Vera Drake." She's certainly due a nod.  Oh, and she's pretty great in this one.

Con: The picture doesn't hit theaters until Dec. 29.  That means a lot of love for her performance is going to have to come from screeners and guild screenings.  That could be dangerous with such a competitive field.  Despite her resume, the Brit is also not that well known on this side of the pond.

Curious as to why Tilda Swinton would be considered for "I Am Love" (which is a foreign film that initially was released back in 2009), and not Isabelle Huppert for "White Material" (also a foreign film that was released in it's own country in '09 but just now made it to the US). Curious that such a legend with a career unlike most actresses living today, with a role that stands with the best of her other work (The Piano Teacher, La Ceremonie, Coup de Torchon, etc) would be ignored for such a political and relevant masterpiece. Swinton deserves a nom as well in my opinion, by no means saying she doesn't. But in a perfect world they would take 2 of the 5 spots.
