Pro: Harris pulled off a rare feat in successfully adapting his own novel to the big screen. What was more impressive is he did so without any of the pitfalls of other authors adapting their own work. And it's the sort of sophisticated and rich thrillers Academy members love.
Con: It's been a long time since "Writer" hit theaters last February and the drama over director Roman Polanski's possible extradition still hovers over the picture. Sadly, that makes it pretty easy for the committee to ignore.
