How did Ricky Gervais do? Is Avatar an unstoppable force? And how was "Glee" a winner and a loser?
Loser: Ricky Gervais
For years, Ricky Gervais has been stealing the show at various awards galas as a presenter or winner, causing many a viewer to yearn for him to be given the keys to the car and allowed to take over a show on his own. If Sunday's Golden Globe performance was any indication, Gervais won't be asked back. It wasn't that Gervais was unfunny, but he misjudged the room completely. Go back and watch the audience sit stone-faced through his opening monologue (after a quick and hilarious bit with favorite foil Steve Carell). The jokes kept missing with the crowd, even if a few viewers at home were laughing. After that monologue was done, Gervais was mostly gone. He returned to make jokes about Paul McCartney's divorce (no laughs) and Mel Gibson's alcoholism (a couple laughs), but when the opportunity came to mock Mickey Rourke, he ducked easy punchlines. Gervais ended by plugging his HBO comedy.
Let there be no doubt that Ricky Gervais is probably one of the industry's five funniest people, but this wasn't a very good showcase. Maybe our expectations were just too high?
