Mo'Nique, "Precious: Based on Push a Novel by Sapphire"
Previous nominations or wins: None
Pros: Mo'Nique has branched out into non-comedic roles a few time before, but her performance as Precious' mother is nothing short of revelation. The fact she is able to make the audience feel sympathy for her character after she's displayed the most abusive and vindictive attributes is nothing sort of amazing. if there is frontrunner in this category, its her.
Cons: It would be nice if she'd spend some time in New York and Los Angeles campaigning for the picture without letting rumors abound that she wants to be "paid" to make publicity appearances. She doesn't have to play the awards season game, but she needs to show she supports the movie hands down. This pundit remembers her incredible enthusiasm and joy after the Sundance premiere. A few moments of that Mo'Nique over the next few months at SAG and Academy Q&A's and she'd probably lock this up might quick. But that's a bit "if."
