Melanie Laurent, "Inglourious Basterds"
Previous nominations or wins: None
Pros: Laurent plays a Jewish woman pretending to be Christian in Nazi-occupied France. Her scenes with the Nazi officer Christoph Waltz where she fears being discovered are truly some of the most spellbinding moments of Quentin Tarantino's critical and box office blockbuster. Hard to argue it's not worth award season recognition.
Cons: The part feels more like a lead even though she's not in big chunks of the film. In theory, that could split the vote and leave her with little recognition in either category. While sympathetic, her character wasn't as adored as some of her male co-stars.
