Kathy Bates, "Cheri"
revious nominations or wins:
Won, Best Actress, "Misery" (1991)
Nominee, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, "Primary Colors" (1999)
Nominee, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, "About Schmidt" (2003)
Pros: Bates is a handful as Madame Peloux, a former French courtesan looking to find her wandering son a future wife at the turn of the 19th Century. She has to be both painfully manipulating and sympathetic at the same time and the combination turns it into one of Bates best performances in years.
Cons: "Cheri" was inexplicably released in June by Miramax with so little buzz it's almost completely out of the awards game. Hitting DVD now, its only hope is for Academy members to discover it on their own or for Miramax to do a strong screener campaign. It's a longshot for sure.
