2010 Best Supporting Actor Contenders

Could a 'Basterd,' a 'Trek' doctor, a 'Goat' and 'Orson Welles' find Oscar?

Christoph Waltz, "Inglourious Basterds"

Christoph Waltz, "Inglourious Basterds"

Previous nominations or wins: None

Pros: Won the Best Actor award at this year's Cannes Film Festival.  Should win numerous year-end best supporting actor awards from critic's groups across the country. Makes what could be a stock villain pathetic, scary and entertaining all at once. Oh, and he's the frontrunner.

Cons: He's definitely in for a nod, the question is whether anyone else will over take him. Is the role "serious" enough or is it such a revelatory turn it won't matter?  We're betting on the latter.

    What Woody Harrelson for Zombieland?

    • Harrelson is much better dramatically in Messenger. He'll get the love there and it's easier to campaign than a role in a comedy.

Christoph Waltz should be in the running for a BEST ACTOR award, not supporting. He made IB what it was and was certainly the lead actor in that film.

    • Would be a hard sell and Weinsteins want the win. No way they put him in lead. It is honestly a supporting role in an ensemble picture. He'll be justly rewarded.

I'd like to add Peter Capaldi in 'In The Loop'.

    • From your post to the Academy's ears. I'd love for In the Loop to get the recognition it deserves on numerous levels, but I am just afraid it won't happen without a serious campaign behind it.

Love the posts - and I'm really rooting for McAvoy this year (and did twice before).

Just to note that it is not Anne-Marie Duff in the photo with Mcavoy, but Kerry Condon.

Interesting you put Tucci for J&J rather than Bones. I agree that one performance will help the other get the nod, but you think he has a better shot at getting nominated for Julie & Julia than The Lovely Bones?

I know it will never happen, but Jackie Earle Haley was da bomb in Watchmen, yo.

Interesting and informative post. Also strange that Matt Damon for Invictus and Christopher Plummer for The Last Station (the word around the campfire is, he's being pushed for Supporting by Sony Classics), not to mention Tucci, aren't mentioned.

I'd lay down money the nominees this year are:

    Matt Damon, INVICTUS
    Alfred Molina, AN EDUCATION
    Christopher Plummer, THE LAST STATION
    Stanley Tucci, THE LOVELY BONES
    Christoph Waltz, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS

And the winner ends up being Tucci or Waltz (right now, I'd lay the green on Waltz as he has the buzz, the story, the character and Weinstein).
