Pros: Streep made audience forget co-star Amy Adam's grating performance with her charming and hilarious turn as Julia Child.  The icon has also been slowly playing the "sure I've won two Oscars, but I've lost 12 straight times" card and that could finally work in her favor this year.

Cons: The movie overall is probably as weak as 1999's "Music of the Heart" and if her December comedy "It's Complicated" is a dud, it could diminish her work in "Julia."  However, that's a big "if."  We're talking Streep here.

I think the only 'locks' in this very weak year for women are Meryl Streep, who gave 'Julie and Julia' exactly what was needed, and Carey Mulligan. Most I can't even imagine snaring nominations unless the Academy throws up its hands and says, 'Well, we have to get to five somehow.' The bigger issue is why major roles are not being written for women? I guess because Megan Fox can't play them.

    • Well, it's a tad random. There are tons of supporting roles this year that skewer the line between lead and supporting with great performances in them. It's a tad cyclical, but you are making an excellent point overall.

Anyone who sees Abbie Cornish as Fannie Brawne and follows it up with "it's a weak year for women" and that "she maybe forgotten by Oscar time" are just not serious about awards. I don't care about her private life. Just how powerful IS Reese, hmmm? This is an Oscar deserving performance.

    • In a perfect world, yes, but this is the Academy. They don't always respond the way they "should." History is littered with many who "may" suffer like Cornish.

So what does Reese run Hollywood? I don't think anyone cares about her divorce. Besides why is it the next person a divorcee gets involved with becomes the person who broke the couple up? How about this, Jake Gyllenhaal was friends with Ryan and then started banging Reese but I guess that's ok. I think the contenders are great just not as well known.

ummmm... let's see, they announce the Spirit Award nominees best Actress two days ago and somehow, here-- with 19 leading contenders, Maria Bello's harrowing performance in "Downloading Nancy" is overlooked. I do look fwd to her nomination in ten days for a GG because that film was a Sundance fav which left many views shaken. Yet, somehow this list needs a 20th place...
