Cannes Film Festival 2013

2010 Best Actor Contenders

Clooney, Damon, Day-Lewis, Firth and who else make the cut?

Colin Firth, "A Single Man"

Colin Firth, "A Single Man"

Previous nominations or wins: None.

Pros: His role as a gay man dealing with the death of his longtime lover during the 1960s has already won him the Venice Film Festival Best Actor Award.  Firth's performance is so good most critics credit it for elevating director Tom Ford's feature debut into something special.  Firth has won many friends in the industry having worked on the studio and indie side on both sides of the Atlantic.

Cons:  Hard to imagine him not getting nominated, but if Academy members don't warm to Ford's stylized film or it severely disappoints at the box office, he may not get in.  But, again, that would be a huge snub.

seriously? no Tom Hardy for "Bronson"?
with some performances here that are hardly what i call "oscar worthy" and his being truly astonishing, i can't believe you didn't even consider him!

I don't think he will win, but Christoph Waltz definitely deserves a nomination for his performance in "Inglourious Basterds".

How about Woody Harrelson for Zombieland? Or would that be considered best supporting actor?

    • That's supporting and probably on at the MTV Movie Awards...

Hugh Dancy ??? He got some great notes on his performance, and the Academy had always been big on mentally challenged characters. I think he has a shot. It's a long shot, but still a shot.

    • Movie was a total bomb in limited release, he's just not a real candidate. Maybe Spirit Awards for Dancy, but that's it.

If Jeremy Renner doesn't get his due and get that nomination, I will quit the Academy Awards forever. No one deserves a nomination more than that man, and his performance was utterly devastating, in what amounts to being, so far, the best movie of the year.

I would love to see Michael Stuhlbarg get a nomination for a very quirky movie that he is brilliant in. But am I missing the charming Peter Sarsgaard in 'An Education'? That would be a shame. If either hambones Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey somehow snatch a nomination, I'll be watching the Independent Sprit Awards live instead of the Oscars. They're always better anyway.

I'd love to see Jim Carrey and McGregor be in the competition for "I Love You, Philipp Morris" instead of those big studio pieces. It's a pity that it seems that this movie had a lot of buzz not so long ago, but does anyone remember it now?
