How do 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' and '22 Jump Street' measure up?
'22 Jump Street'
Directors: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller
Cast: Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube, Amber Stevens
Why it's better: Okay, this is no knock on “21 Jump Street,” which was pretty much a delight, and set a smart comic template for this follow-up to build on. But “22” is conceptually ingenious, self-reflexively building its sequel status (and Hollywood's preference for tried-and-tested formulae) into the narrative, as our frustrated undercover heroes are instructed over and over to repeat what worked before. It's an in-joke that could come off as smug and try-hard if the chemistry between Tatum and Hill weren't so by comfortable and spontaneous at this point, while Lord and Miller's subsequent experience (including their 2014 smash, “The Lego Movie”) has given them the confidence to go big and go bananas. And even if all that weren't true, the Cate Blanchett line alone is enough to place this above its predecessor.
