The Avengers (1998)
Why it got the greenlight: As a long-running Brit series in the '60s, "The Avengers" defined modern cool with a stylish, sexy duo fighting crime with an amazing array of gadgets. A big screen treatment seemed inevitable, and Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman seemed to be perfectly cast as, respectively, John Steed and Emma Peel.
Why a franchise never materialized: Virtually impossible to sit through, it epitomizes the loud, shrill bombast of late '90s Hollywood with a convoluted script and CG effects that looked unfinished. Audiences largely ignored it. - DL
