16. 'Pretty in Pink' (1986)
Best movie-music moment: It's prom night and Andie (Molly Ringwald) shows up alone in her homemade pink dress to face the guy who jilted her (Andrew McCarthy). She wants to hate him, her best friend Duckie (Jon Cryer) wants to hate him, but in the end, she goes to him in a misty parking lot and they make out in front of his BMW as Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark's "If You Leave" plays in the background. Even if you think she should have ended up with Duckie (per John Hughes' original script), this Cinderella scene is Eighties magic.
Why we love it: Brooding pop music is essential to surviving high school.
Tracklist highlights: "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" by The Smiths; "Shell-Shock" by New Order; "Pretty In Pink" by The Psychedelic Furs; "Bring On The Dancing Horses" by Echo & The Bunnymen; "Round, Round" by Belouis Some; "If You Leave" by Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark.
