4. Anne Bancroft, "The Graduate" (1967)
Mrs. Robinson is one of the great predators in film, a rich woman who doesn't care who she hurts in pursuit of her own pleasures designed to numb her to her life of success and wealth. Watching her toy with Hoffman's Benjamin Braddock, you get a sense that this is someone who never hears the word "no," and when they do, it is a signal that she needs to fight and even kill. There is a malevolence to her sexual appetite, and Bancroft doesn't soft-pedal it at all. By the time the film reaches that church finale, Bancroft stands revealed as the empty, awful husk she is. It's a performance so powerful that she's become an entire archetype, the original MILF-at-your-own-risk.
