15 superheroes who deserve a great reboot
Marvel's "The Avengers" -- with its new-and-improved Hulk (hey, third or fourth time's a charm) -- is finally opening on May 4. We thought we'd celebrate the superhero epic by seeing which other comic heroes could use a cinematic or televisual facelift.

April 28, 2012 at 11:51PM EST Reply to CommentGreen Lantern doesn't need a reboot, it just needs a good sequel. Reynolds is a good Hal Jordan, and Mark Strong is a spectacular Sinestro, they just need a script to work with.
Shaun Reynolds was awful, and Blake Lively was even worse. Nathan Fillion should've played Hal, but I'm glad he didn't have to play in that lousy move with that lousy script.
May 1, 2012 at 10:50PM ESTMark Strong was good casting, but too many things went wrong with that film. Reboot it, but only if they come up with a good script and better casting.

April 29, 2012 at 12:51AM EST Reply to CommentPlease, for the love of God, don't remake The Rocketeer.
The original was the most perfect film you could make from the source material for two reasons: Dave Stevens and Joe Johnston.
Even if you were lucky enough to have Johnston come back and recreate his fantastic production design, without Stevens' input, and meticulous love and devotion to the source material, it wouldn't be the same.
The recent Rocketeer Adventures in the comics exemplify why you shouldn't do this. While fun, they don't have the heart or soul of Stevens original work.
And besides, the mass audiences will still stay away in droves. The Rocketeer is for a niche audience, it's a throwback in style as well as tone. Modern audiences would find a remake of The Rocketeer cheesy and boring.

April 29, 2012 at 2:09AM EST Reply to CommentI don't want to hear any more talk about a Justice League movie.
The last thing DC should be doing is trying to copy what Marvel is doing. DC has their great Batman franchise which should have another great chapter this summer and Superman will hopefully be good too. But for the love of crumb cake do not try and put them into a movie together. This won't work with the foundation that Nolan has laid down.
As for other DC properties:
Like the first poster said, a Green Lantern sequel with the same cast, a proper story and a visionary director may work. But will the studios want to risk another bomb?
I think the Flash could work as a movie. I have serious doubts about Wonder Woman though. But maybe with the success of the Avengers they will let Joss Whedon have another shot at it. I'd be interested in a movie if he did it.
Other than that I don't think DC has a lot of viable characters to get a movie treatment. Green Arrow? Aquaman? Catwoman? Martian Manhunter? Pass....
Shaun Aquaman, if they make him more like the badass Aquaman of the Peter David comics (later adapted into the version of Aquaman used in the Justice League cartoons) that could work. It wouldn't be the image most people have of the character (damned Super Friends), no, but it could make for an excellent movie.
May 1, 2012 at 10:59PM ESTReally, I'm surprised that neither WB/DC nor Marvel has tried to put their respective "aquamen" on the big screen yet. Either Aquaman or Namor will happen eventually, and whichever one gets there first will pretty much kill any chance the other studio gets to make theirs.
My guess is that Marvel, which is running out of A-list characters to make movies with, will get Namor on the big screen before WB/DC gets Aquaman made... Whether in his own film, or as part of a team-up.
The more gritty Green Arrow of the 90's Mike Grell-penned comics might work too. Those were great. Then again, between The Hunger Games and Hawkeye in The Avengers, there's room for only so many archers too.
I loves me some Martian Manhunter, but I doubt he'd be able to carry his own movie. Of course, they'd probably just the call the movie "J'onn J'onzz" instead. Look how well that worked for "John Carter"!

April 29, 2012 at 3:41AM EST Reply to CommentTo be honest, the LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN movie is in my opinion better than the comics. The movie was a fun callback to the cheesy/cool fantasy action movies of the 80's, but the comics have nothing to offer than splatter and some clever references to classic literature.
Fliegender That's insane troll logic.

April 29, 2012 at 4:20AM EST Reply to CommentI think Superman needs a reboot or rather the reboot that is coming out needs to be good. Superman has been through a rough patch recently, not just in films but in comics. With such a crippling failure as Superman Returns, this new film should attempt to make the man of steel awesome again, instead of making him a soap opera stalker.

hotel I think Superman Returns gets a bad rap. Was it perfect? No. But I thought it was fun, and it got pretty good reviews when it came out. I don't understand where all the hate comes from.
April 29, 2012 at 8:15AM ESTShaun You don't understand it? Well, let's see... It was a blatant, almost scene for scene ripoff of the 1978 Superman.
May 1, 2012 at 11:11PM ESTThey also tried selling it as the "real" sequel to Superman II, but SR began with Supes having left Earth for five years... Yet Superman II ended with him telling the president he's "never leave" again. He not only broke his promise, but he broke it quickly. He had to have left shortly after that promise to not know Lois was pregnant. If he left knowing Lois was pregnant, that makes Supes a deadbeat dad.
Of course, being a deadbeat dad would be bad enough, but this Superman was also a freakin' STALKER after returning to find that Lois had moved on. That's heroic. His greatest enemy is out of jail, there was a East Coast power failure and museum theft of a large green rock that happened, and Supes isn't looking into that or keeping tabs on Luthor? Stalking Lois is clearly more important.
Oh, and using Luthor yet again? YAWWWWWNN... Luthor returns for yet another land-grab scheme? Please, don't wake for me this.
Singer had a chance to make an epic, cosmic Superman adventure for the 21st century with the kind of fx that weren't possible back in the Christopher Reeve era. But instead of something truly worthy of Superman, something with maybe Darkseid or a modern-day take on Brainiac, we got Luthor's real estate scheme, using Kryptonite once again in order overpower the hero.
Sure was a lot of fun watching KUMAR kick Superman's ass, wasn't it? Terrible, terrible movie. I sure hope next year's reboot finally gets it right.

April 29, 2012 at 8:09AM EST Reply to Comment"...it would be a trip to see them make an R-rated stand-alone before dropping him into someone else's movie as a guest star, or using one of their films starring another hero to kickstart a brand new take on Blade."
With which character do you think Blade could do a crossover? All the Avengers characters live in the same universe, and I don't think it's a universe that features vampires. In fact, Blade is so radically different from all the other Marvel properties that I'm familiar with, that I don't see how he could work in anything but a completely standalone film.
Prettok Vampires have appeared in "The Avengers"a couple of times. (Count Nefaria for example)
April 29, 2012 at 11:41AM ESTcal I'm not talking about the comics. I'm talking about the world that's been set up in the films. Do you really think that vampires have any place in that world?
April 29, 2012 at 12:03PM ESTThat Werewolf Guy Well, it's a world where Gods exist! Yes, they are just aliens with technology, that is so high advanced that it comes across as magic for our human minds, but from there it's just a small step to explain vampires.
April 29, 2012 at 12:08PM ESTcal I'm not saying that they couldn't come up with some pseudo-scientific means of justifying vampirism. I'm saying that vampires are a complete tonal mismatch for the avengers universe.

May 1, 2012 at 11:16PM EST Reply to CommentWhy reboot Catwoman at all? She's a Batman sometimes-villain, sometimes-ally. There have been some great Catwoman comics over the past decade or two, but I don't know that we'd ever need to see her headline a movie again. Anyhow, I'm still not sold on Anne Hathaway playing the part. Guess we'll see when TDKR comes out.
Also... How many times has The Punisher been rebooted? Three times? Three failures? Like in baseball, that's enough strikes. Take a seat please. It's not a character with widespread appeal, and it's never going to work.
