'Son of the Mask' (2005)
Sequel to: "The Mask" (1994)
Did it kill the franchise: Yes.
Why it was so unnecessary: While "The Mask" was a raucous, over-the-top vehicle for Jim Carrey's loose-limbed physical comedy (and this movie helped cement his status as the go-to funny guy of the late '90s), "Son of the Mask" handed the reins over to a kid and a dog. The result is just as insipid as you'd think it would be. Instead of a storyline focused on wooing Cameron Diaz, we get a dancing baby and toothless family-friendly jokes even kids probably found dull. Even the middling talent of Jamie Kennedy is wasted (Alan Cumming is at best a victim of this mess), and more importantly, we're left with a noxious, insufferably bland taste in our mouths. Whatever you think of Carrey's schtick, this follow-up only serves to make his scenery-chewing look good in comparison.
