'Scary Movie 2' (2001)
Sequel to: "Scary Movie" (2000)
Did it kill the franchise: Not even close.
Why it was so unnecessary: The Wayans brothers applied the "Airplane!" spoof formula to post-"Scream" horror films in the surprise 2000 hit, which featured a poster promising "No Mercy. No Shame. No Sequel." So much for promises. The quickly-produced sequel offered more and less of the same, clocking in at a breezy 81 minutes, including credits. Most of the original's principles returned to stumble through increasingly perfunctory spoof scenes, and funny newcomers David Cross and Chris Elliot are given little to do with their brief screen time. But a hit is a hit, and so far, three more sequels have appeared, although the Wayans brothers walked away after this one, allowing "Airplane!" vet David Zucker to take over the assembly line.
