Premiered: June 1, 1968
You can't make a list like this without a few cheats and "The Prisoner" is certainly our largest. "The Prisoner" premiere on ITV in the UK in September of 1967 and the Patrick McGoohan-created counterculture spy classic ran for only 17 episodes, so calling it a "hit" would be an overstatement. However, "The Prisoner" is a TV landmark, widely considered to be one of the most important and boundary-pushing pieces of programming ever to hit the medium. And while "The Prisoner" never made the impact in the United States that it made abroad, its American run was important enough that Matthew Weiner featured an episode during this most recent season of "Mad Men."
