The Road (2009)
Cormac McCarthy's grim post-apocaylptic yarn -- in which a grieving widower and his young son roam the scorched wastelands in search of means to survive -- was turned into an equally bleak film starring Viggo Mortensen. The cause of the apocalypse is never revealed, but flashbacks (featuring Charlize Theron as the man's wife) indicate that it came rather suddenly. The film's last scene, however, offers a glimmer of hope.
