See how Hollywood has dealt with zombies, cyborgs, epidemics and more
This Lars von Trier film about how two sisters - one a chronic depressive, the other an emotionally-stunted control freak - deal with the possibility of extinction features a set of achingly-gorgeous visuals (the opening shots are masterfully strange and evocative) and standout performances from lead actresses Kirsten Dunst (the depressive) and Charlotte Gainsbourg (the control freak). Dunst is especially memorable, charting the wild mood swings of the bipolar Justine with a level of searing realism that's often difficult to watch. The hauntingly beautiful (and genuinely terrifying) final scene is tough to shake.
