"24: Live Another Day" (FOX)
Monday, May 5
It's been nearly four years since Jack Bauer became a fugitive from his own government in the real-time thriller's series finale. In the time since, there was a lot of talk about doing a stand-alone "24" movie, but eventually everyone seemed to realize that Jack's adventures work better in serialized form — only perhaps not quite so much of it. So the "event series" "Live Another Day" will have 12 episodes rather than 24, with each hour still taking place in real time, but with gaps in between certain hours so the writers don't have to resort to the 2014 equivalents of amnesia or the cougar. The new story is set (and was filmed) in London, with a mix of familiar faces from the show (Kiefer Sutherland, Mary Lynn Rajskub, William Devane, Kim Raver) and franchise newcomers (Benjamin Bratt, Yvonne Strahovski, Michelle Fairley). Does quintessential Bush era hero Jack still work today, and after viewers had 8 seasons to become intimately familiar with the show's many narrative tricks? (Start placing your bets on who the mole is this time.) We'll see, but "24" at its best was so good that "Live Another Day" is worth at least a look.
