David Lean's "Nostromo" starring Mickey Rourke and Dennis Quaid
This one breaks my heart because it would have happened. It was going to happen. David Lean, whose career was already as great as any film career ever, wanted to make one final film, and he spent several years making sure the script was right before casting Marlon Brando, Mickey Rourke, Paul Scofield, Peter O'Toole, Christopher Lambert, and Isabella Rossellini. Steven Spielberg was onboard as producer, giving Lean a buffer between him and Warner Bros., and they had a start date. Two weeks before that, Lean died, and the film was abruptly cancelled. I am sorry that the script, a fascinating document, was never directed by anyone else, but it can't be easy trying to step into shoes as legendary as Lean's.
