Alejandro Jodorowsky almost directed "Dune"
Frank Pavich has just finished his documentary on the amazing plans that Jodorowsky had for "Dune," coming off of his arthouse triumphs "El Topo" and "The Holy Mountain," and watching the film just made me ache for what could have been. It's amazing how much of Jodorowsky's work on the film was cannibalized by other movies, including the original "Star Wars" and Ridley Scott's "Alien," but there was no way Jodorowsky could have put together the budget to accomplish what he had in mind. Beyond that, I'm not sure they could have done it on a technical level. One thing is clear, though… Jodorowsky's heartbreak over what might have happened drove him to explore other media, like the comic books he created with Moebius, and the film world is poorer for it.
