Steven Spielberg's "Benjamin Button" with Tom Cruise
I have no idea how Steven Spielberg would have handled the effects required to successfully pull off "Benjamin Button," but there was a point in the early '90s where that came very close to happening. Cruise was at an interesting point in his career at that moment, continually reinventing himself and pushing to work with every great director in town, and the story had already been through any number of hands as Hollywood tried to figure out how to flesh out what was essentially a sad character sketch. Cruise was no longer a kid, but he was still young enough that in order to pull off most of the movie, they would have to use make-up to make him both older and younger. One can only imagine how much more schmaltz would have been wrung from the story if Spielberg had been calling the shots.
