These currently homeless films could find room if picked up
Director: Atom Egoyan
Stars: Reese Witherspoon, Stephen Moyer, Kevin Durand, Mireille Enos
Why it's on our radar: It's been almost 16 years since Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan scored a surprise Best Director nod for critical favorite “The Sweet Hereafter,” and he hasn't come even remotely close to Oscar contention since. (Between such films as “Where the Truth Lies” and “Chloe,” meanwhile, he's lost favor with critics, too.) But he could get back on track with this dramatized account of the West Memphis Three murder case, a notorious miscarriage of justice that has already been covered in several acclaimed documentaries, one of which (“Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory”) was nominated for an Oscar two years ago. Reese Witherspoon – also looking to get back in the Academy's good books eight years after winning for “Walk the Line” – looks to have her meatiest dramatic lead in some time as the mother of one of the murder victims.
