"MARY Queen of Scots"
Director: Thomas Imbach
Stars: Camille Rutherford, Sean Biggerstaff, Aneurin Barnard, Edward Hogg
Why it's on our radar: From Cate Blanchett to Charles Laughton to Colin Firth, the list of actors to catch the Academy's eye by playing English royals is a long and illustrious one. Could French up-and-comer Camille Rutherford join the list and become the second actress, after Vanessa Redgrave, to do so for playing the doomed Mary Stuart? It seems a long shot, given that Swiss director Thomas Imbach's curiously capitalized take on her story is a modest French production with no star names to attract either audiences or larger distributors. Still, if the film finds a critical following in Toronto, it's not inconceivable.
