Director: Sylvain Chomet
Stars: Guillaume Gouix, Anne Le Ny
Festival(s): Maybe Telluride, Toronto
Why it's on our radar: Offbeat French animator Sylvain Chomet is a four-time Oscar nominee, having scored most recently with a Best Animation Feature nod for 2010's “The Illusionist” – but what can we expect from his first live-action feature? An equivalent amount of whimsy to his animated work, it seems: “Attila Marcel” stars rising French heartthrob Guillaume Gouix as an aspiring pianist whose emotional development ceased at the age of two, following the death of his parents. With the aid of a magical potion, he's able to revisit his memories and confront his trauma. Early signs point to a visually inventive musical fantasy, but does it have crossover crowd-pleaser potential? And should we read anything into the fact that it has bypassed the major European fests?
