"The Zero Theorem"
Director: Terry Gilliam
Stars: Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Ben Whishaw, Tilda Swinton
Festival(s): Venice, Toronto
Why it's on our radar: 2009's “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” scored a couple of below-the-line Oscar nods, but that aside, Terry Gilliam's work hasn't figured into the awards season since the mid-1990s. There's no obvious indication that “The Zero Theorem” will change that: it has a stellar cast, but his work always does, and while a Venice competition berth affords a measure of prestige, his calamitous “The Brothers Grimm” had one of those too. Still, this typically quirky-sounding drama about a computer hacker (reigning Best Supporting Actor champ Christoph Waltz) searching for the meaning of life is one of the more intriguing big-name projects of the upcoming festival slate. Will Toronto add it eventually, or will it remain a Venice exclusive?
